It’s the night when San Diego’s animal lovers gather for a party that saves lives. Your Rancho Coastal Humane Society’s “Celebration of Second Chances” was held on Saturday evening, October 22 at the Del Mar Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe. This year’s theme was “Planning for the Future – A Groundbreaking Celebration.”
RCHS President Jim Silveira reminds us, “The Celebration generates funds that are used to care for homeless animals until they are adopted, provide humane education for children, feed the pets of seniors and veterans, visit schools and extended care facilities with therapy animals, and rescue the pets of domestic violence victims.”
San Diego County Third District Supervisor Dave Roberts presented a proclamation naming October 22, 2016 as “Planning for the Future Day” in San Diego County.
Guests were treated to the world premiere of a video created by Emmy Award winner Zoya Popova. From the humble beginning of Rancho Coastal Humane Society in a little house on a dirt road, the video walked through the years then gave a glimpse into the future as RCHS prepares for the construction of new Medical and Humane Education centers.
Jeff Zevely, host of the “Zevely Zone” on CBS News 8, returned as co-host along with his wife, Heather. Jeff presented a video of his experiences as a dog that Heather surrendered to the shelter because of poor behavior. (He had the whole room laughing as he went for a ride in the car…crashed through Jim’s office, played ball in the park, then had a doggie dream in his kennel.)
The evening concluded with a “speed painting” demonstration and an update on the dogs that arrived at the shelter after being evacuated from the recent Louisiana floods.
Jim says, “For 56 years RCHS has kept pace with the community that has grown around us. Now it’s time for us to bring our veterinary medical and humane education facilities up to date. We really are planning for the future.”
