Pickin’ ‘em up and Puttin’ ‘em down at the “5K Paw Walk in the Garden.”

There’s only one day of the year when you can take your dog into the San Diego Botanic Garden. The 6th annual 5K Paw Walk in the Garden was held on Saturday, February 17, 2018. The event benefits the people, plants, and pets served by your Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS) and the San Diego Botanic Garden (SDBG).

“We had between 450 and 500 registered walkers this year. That’s not surprising considering that it’s the only day of the year when families can take their dogs for a walk and the San Diego Botanic Garden,” says RCHS Events Coordinator Kelly Peters.  “Saturday seems to be the favorite dog walking day in San Diego. We’re giving them the option of taking the walk every dog is begging to go on.”

“The 5K Paw Walk in the Garden isn’t competitive. It’s just for fun,” says Sam Beukema, Education and Events Manager for the Garden. “Walkers can cover the full course or just take a stroll and enjoy the Garden. It’s not just the walking part that people love. The 5K Paw Walk in the Garden features pet products, food (for people), treats (for dogs), displays of pet products, and helpful information for pet lovers. The Peanut Butter / Cream Cheese challenge is always a highlight for dogs and their people.”

Peters says that, while the Walk isn’t competitive, the fundraising effort grows stronger every year. “Top Individual Fundraiser Nancy Hinsch won an Electra Bike valued at almost $900, a $100 Gift Certificate to The Fish Market, and passes to the San Diego Botanic Garden. Team Drake, the top team fundraiser, won a $100 Gift Certificate to The Fish Market, $40 to Roxy Restaurant, $30 to Potato Shack, an annual membership & 4 day pass tickets to the San Diego Botanic Garden, and an Everything Dog Basket with gift certificates to Black Wing Farms, Pet Friendly Landscaping, treats, toys, and watercolor painting.”

There are only a few rules for walkers, but they’re important for safety.
*           Dogs must be kept on leash at all times.
*           No leashes longer than 6 feet (including retractable leashes.)
*           No dogs in heat.
*           Owners must clean up after their dog. (There will be poo bags available.)
*           Limit two dogs per person. Really. We mean it. No more than two.
*           Dogs must be up to date on vaccinations.
