On the Go. On the Grow. The Animal Safehouse Program.

While most of the programs and services provided by your Rancho Coastal Humane Society are pretty easy to explain, that’s not the case with the Animal Safehouse Program. It’s always on the go and always growing.

When the Animal Safehouse Program began in 1997 there was one, well-defined goal. ASP served as the safety net for the pets of domestic violence victims. Domestic violence shelters were equipped to care for human victims, but not for their pets. Dogs, cats, and other pets left behind frequently became the new victims. Rather than leave their pets behind, human victims stayed and the abuse continued. Thanks to ASP, victims and their children were able to escape knowing that their pets were safe.

We’re always finding new ways for ASP to help people. One of our most recent expansions involves the United Service Organization. Most people call it the USO. ASP is working with our friend Rich Setzer, the San Diego Coordinator for Dogs on Deployment, to provide pet food for the USO Mobile Food Pantry.

The USO website explains:

In partnership with Feeding San Diego, USO San Diego is providing a Mobile Pantry to Active Duty, Reserve, Guard and military families. This program is held on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month. We are able to serve 200 families. The Mobile Pantry has fresh produce available as well as staple goods. To Participate: You will need to show your valid military ID.

The USO Mobile Food Pantry will be in ACE Parking Lot #12, across from the USO San Diego’s Downtown Center on the corner of 3rd and A Street on the first and third Saturdays of the month from 11 AM to 9 PM.
Your Rancho Coastal Humane Society, through ASP and our Community Pet Food Bank, is participating on the 3rd Saturday of every month. We’ll be distributing dog and cat food, toys, and other pet supplies.

There is never a charge for anyone who needs help from your Rancho Coastal Humane Society’s Animal Safehouse Program or Community Pet Food Bank. These programs are possible thanks to you.
