He could hardly control his excitement when Manager Brian Cook called from your Rancho Coastal Humane Society Thrift Shop at 120 Aberdeen Drive in Cardiff by the Sea. “Get over here as fast as you can!”
We ran through the Sporting Good section on the way in. They had some newly donated dirt bikes, several boogie boards, and a couple dozen wetsuits. At the counter we stopped to look at the Jewelry section before heading to Brian’s office.
What’s so important that you had to tell us in person?
“Last year we fell just short of one million dollars in sales. This year, for the fiscal year that ended on June 30th, we had $1,100,599 in sales!”
Brian says there were three ways to look at it. First, that was a million dollars’ worth of sold electronics, furniture, clothing, jewelry, musical instruments, and small appliances.
Next, he had a list of what that million dollars would do for the shelter.
- It stocks the Community Pet Food Bank, keeping families and their pets together.
- It pays for surgeries and medical treatment.
- It saves orphaned, ill, and injured animals at our San Diego Wildlife Center.
- It buys educational materials for kids.
- It provides foster care for our Adoption/FOCAS and Animal Safehouse Programs.
Brian said that Other Brian and Other-Other Brian (sometimes called B3PO) figured out that one million is one thousand thousands. They tried counting to one million, but gave up at 867 when they learned it would take 23 days to count that high.
“They tried stacking BB’s, but it was too windy and the BB’s kept falling over. So they started stacking pennies. That lasted 15 minutes before Other Brian figured that one million pennies would be about five thousand feet tall and weigh close to three tons.”
Now that he had calmed down a bit, Brian put it all into perspective when he said, “The money raised at the Thrift Shop helps people and animals when they need it most. Thank you for supporting your Rancho Coastal Humane Society where Every Animal Deserves a Tomorrow.” ®
There are lots of ways to support your Rancho Coastal Humane Society through the Thrift Shop. You can donate stuff you no longer use. You can shop at the Thrift Shop or Online. Special thanks to Pam Whisnant. Pam is a Thrift Shop volunteer who volunteers to supervise the other volunteers. It can be a tough job, but the rewards are worth the effort. Thank You Pam!
