It’s starting to sound less “houndy” around here

Three weeks ago the kennels at your Rancho Coastal Humane Society sounded like a hound convention! That’s what it usually sounds like right after we receive dogs transferred here through our FOCAS program on a Wings of Rescue flight.

“A Wings of Rescue flight carrying more than 100 dogs and puppies left Lafayette, Louisiana on the morning of March 7th,” says Kathy Zerkle, Vice President of Adoption Services at RCHS. “They landed in Colorado Springs long enough to drop off 30 of their passengers and refuel. After that the puppies and dogs completed the final leg of their journey. That was the flight that brought them to San Diego. The flight that lead them to their forever homes.”

Wings of Rescue President and C. E. O. Ric Browde says, “These pets were in crowded shelters in Louisiana before being transferred to Acadiana Animal Aid in Lafayette. This lifesaving flight is a joint effort of Wings of Rescue,, and The puppies and dogs arriving in San Diego became available for adoption at your Rancho Coastal Humane Society, Labradors and Friends Rescue, San Diego Humane Society and The Rescued Dog.”

Kathy says, “Several of the adult dogs became available within just a few days. We held on to the puppies a little longer to update their vaccinations, spay or neuter, and make sure they’re completely healthy before we send them home with their new families.”

RCHS President Jim Silveira adds, “This is one of the most exciting things we get to do. Many of these dogs and puppies would not have had a future if Wings of Rescue hadn’t flown them out of there, like they did with 11,183 other dogs and cats last year.”

Most of the Wings of Rescue dogs are gone, but the expenses they created remain. RCHS is accepting donations to cover the cost of the flight and to provide care and treatment for the new arrivals. We’re also preparing for the next Wings of Rescue flight….whenever that might be.
