Blessing of the Animals by Tibetan Monks

Your Rancho Coastal Humane Society has participated in several Blessing of the Animals events during the past 58 years, but this time was extra special. A group of Tibetan Monks touring the United States visited our San Diego Wildlife Center (SDWC) at 2380 Camino Vida Roble in Carlsbad on May 12th to bless the new facility and to bless the wildlife patients. The event continued with the monks blessing family pets who attended as well as some who were no longer with us.

SDWC Director Trish Jackman says, “These monks come from the Gaden Sharste Monastery in southern India. This is part of their ‘Sacred Arts of Tibet Tour’ of the United States to raise funds to support the monastery and Gaden Shartse Monastic University.”

Most stops during their two-year tour include one week in each city, but the San Diego stop lasted two weeks. During each stop, the monks visit businesses where they cleanse spaces to bring good energy. Their visit to the San Diego Wildlife Center was the only local event involving a blessing of the animals.

Two of the seven touring monks speak English. They travel with translators who are with them during their visits, including the Blessing of the Animals.

Trish says, “The San Diego Wildlife Center worked with a Friends of the Monks group to arrange the visit. While the purpose of the tour is to raise funds to support the monastery and university, 100% of the proceeds of the Blessing of the Animals at SDWC was donated to the San Diego Wildlife Center.”

Trish adds, “We were also excited that the Blessing of the Animals was held the day before Mother’s Day. For most of us, our pets are like our children and we’re blessed to have them. This was an opportunity to return the blessings. That could not have been more evident than it was for the couple who came to the Blessing of the Animals with photos of a dog that had died recently. The monk blessed the spirit of their pet. Nearly everyone at the event had to wipe their eyes. It was a moment that none of us will forget.”
