When a dog escapes from its house or yard, the hardest part can be locating it, even if it’s right across the street. Starting this Saturday, February 25th fifty people adopting pre-selected dogs from your Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS) in Encinitas will be protected from that danger when they receive free “Whistle GPS Pet Trackers.” The trackers, that send your pet’s location and activity level to your smart phone, are being made available at no cost by Greater Good.org and Rescue Bank.
“Losing a dog is one of the most frightening things that can happen to a family,” says RCHS President Jim Silveira. “If you’re lucky, you’ll find it in your neighbor’s yard. But a frightened or confused dog can also take off running and be a mile away in just a few minutes. A dog wearing Whistle Pet Tracker can be located immediately.”
The Whistle Pet Tracker comes with a home base that tracks the dog’s location and activity level in your immediate area. If a dog leaves the area of the home base the Whistle Pet Tracker notifies the owner. Dog owners can take the home base along if they leave their home area or go on vacation. If a dog strays out of the range of the Whistle Pet Tracker the owner can follow the dog’s signal on their smart phone.
Silveira says, “When you enter your dog’s information it sets some daily activity goals. Throughout the day you can check your smart phone to see if your dog is being active or idle. At the end of the day you can see whether your dog met its activity goal, exceeded the goal, or if it needs more exercise. This can also be beneficial for dog owners if they use it as an incentive to get more exercise with their dogs.”
Another feature gives dog owners the option of logging the dog’s meals and receiving reminders when it’s time to give their dog its medication.
The Whistle GPS Pet Tracker normally sells for $79.95. The Whistle Trackers that will be given to adopters of the selected dogs come with a complimentary three-month subscription. After that the dog owners have the option to continue the service.
