Volunteer Spotlight: March 2026
Meet Dave Kendall, Retired Navy Pilot!

What inspired you to start volunteering with us, and how long have you been involved?
After retirement, I was looking to make a difference with some volunteer work. I love dogs and thought RCHS might be the perfect fit. I have been involved for over two years. Over that time, I have adopted two wonderful dogs. I have a magnet on my car that says, “Who rescued who?” – it has been so true for both of my adoptions.
What does the volunteer role look like, and what do you enjoy the most about it?
Over the past two years I have been trained to be a dog companion and a dog walker. When the new Medical Center opened, I volunteered to help assist them with laundry, recovery cage cleaning, surgical table + equipment cleaning and sterilization. Basically, anything they need to fire up so that vet assistants can devote their time to medical tasks. I also do some painting when needed.
Is there a moment or experience that made you feel especially proud to volunteer here?
I think my most exciting times are getting to know the dogs and seeing them find their forever homes. Being one of the adopters has been very rewarding. Both of my little girls (Olive and Ebony) have made our empty nest home so enjoyable. They are so welcoming and glad to see us, and we love them.
What would you say to someone who’s considering volunteering but hasn’t taken the first step yet?
Just come to RCHS and meet some of the sweet dogs. RCHS provides all the training you will need to be successful. After you get to know a particular dog and see them get adopted, you will see why we are all here!!! Come join us – you will be happy you did.
