We could hear the chanting all the way across the parking lot at your Rancho Coastal Humane Society Thrift Shop at 120 Aberdeen Drive in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. Headed toward the front door, we passed a couple newly donated mountain bikes, some gently used wet suits, and a couple racks of ladies clothing that had just been marked down to make room for the newer donations.

Past the jewelry counter and book department…Thrift Shop Manager Brian Cook was leading a parade of staff members and volunteers. They were all singing, “We’re number three! We’re number three!” They continued like a marching band between the living room furniture and the Electronics section. Other Brian had just arranged it so it looked like his living room. He was sitting on the newly donated couch, making sure the angle was right to watch the big screen TV that had just been donated that morning.

Other Brian. What the heck are Brian and the rest of them talking about?

“You haven’t heard the news? We’re number three! There’s a website called ‘Only In Your State.’ They rated the best thrift stores in southern California then put together a road trip to the highest rated shops. We’re number three! Pretty cool, huh?”

Actually, that’s very cool! The website says;

By now Brian and his band had grabbed a trombone out of the music section, walked out through Housewares, and were headed to the donut shop next door. “We’re number three!” Other Brian never got up from the couch. He just yelled, “Hey! Will you guys bring me a donut and a cup of coffee?”

When you think about all the thrift stores in southern California, being number three is a really big deal! But, as Brian reminds us, the money raised at the Thrift Shop helps people and animals when they need it most. We think we are number one at that!
