A Safety Net for Baby Bun 

“Baby Bun” is one of the many companion animals whose pet parent turned to Rancho Coastal Humane Society’s Animal Safehouse Program (ASP) while seeking safety and a better future. Her story is one of resilience, hope and the joy of reunion. Baby Bun entered ASP with a reunification plan in place but, due to circumstances beyond her family’s control, she was surrendered into our FOCAS Adoption Program. For six months, despite her loving personality, there was little adoption interest. Then, came the best news: Baby Bun’s family had stabilized, secured a new home, and wanted her back. Of course, we said YES! Keeping families together is at the heart of what we do. 

During her time with us, Baby Bun faced serious medical challenges. Our veterinarian, Dr. Julie Moews, discovered that she had a heart murmur, leading to an echocardiogram that confirmed a heart defect called PDA (patent ductus arteriosus). Surgery was recommended, and while she awaited the procedure, Baby Bun remained playful and affectionate. She enjoyed outings to the park, worked with our Behavior & Training Specialist Libby, and was cared for by several wonderful foster families. 

Reunited 

The most heartwarming moment came when she was reunited with her family. Her mom shared: 
“We appreciate all of you sincerely. The kids say every day, ‘I can’t believe we have Baby Bun back!’ She recognized my boys right away and jumped on them, knocking them over. It was so cute.” 

The family also reflected on the role ASP played in their lives: “ASP kept our family together, and we are truly thankful for each and every one of you. Thank you for loving her when we couldn’t at the time.” 

Today, Baby Bun is right where she belongs and is surrounded by her mom and seven siblings who adore her. Her heart is healed, her family is whole, and her story is a reflection of ASP’s commitment to keep pets and families together – when they need us most!
