What’s It All About Alfie?

Alfie’s story is one that may cause you to reach for the tissue box. Go ahead. We’ll wait.

Alfie (known as “Alfred” while in our care) is a 5.5-year-old Jack Russell mix. Earlier this year, Alfie’s owner died and no one in the family could care for him. Alfie landed at the Department of Animal Services in Carlsbad where Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS) Veterinarian, Julie Moews, also works. Dr. Moews said, “He was my favorite dog at the shelter. He had a potentially negative prognosis, but I wanted to help him.” She identified a spot on his back as a cancerous tumor and asked us to transfer him to RCHS so she could personally perform his surgery.

After more tests, Dr. Moews removed the tumor and the tissue surrounding it to lower the probability of it coming back. Afterward, Dr. Moews advised, “It was a cancerous tumor, but he handled the surgery like a champ.”

Once he was feeling better, RCHS went to work finding him a forever home. He was a big hit during a visit to the Fox 5 Morning News. Then, Petcurious.com featured him, describing how Jack Russell’s are “a lively and intelligent breed, known for their boundless energy and strong hunting instincts.”

A match is made

Curt recognized Alfie’s celebrity status and emerged as the best possible match. He learned about the previous owner who died and how Dr. Moews had gotten him transferred and then performed the surgery herself. He knew that Alfred was still recovering, but that we believed he would bounce back as good as new. He knew Alfie was the dog for him.

Within two days of his adoption, Curt was sharing photos of Alfie in his new forever home. RCHS President & CEO Judi Sanzo sent this quick reply:

Curt, Thank you for sharing these amazing photos of Alfie.  I have no doubt that Alfie has found his way into your heart as quickly as he found his way into your home.  He is a staff favorite and a “compassion pull” from Department of Animal Services at the request of our veterinarian, Dr. Julie Moews.  Dr. Moews is not an “easy mark” and yet Alfie made it clear that he needed her to save him!

So, we did….so we could give him the second chance he deserves!  Thank you for opening your home and heart to this RCHS adoptable dog.  Wishing you many happy tails!   Judi

Curt replied just as quickly:

Judi – Thank you for your kind thoughts. Alfie seems very happy here and we certainly are. I’ve only discovered two problems with Alfie so far: my morning walk only takes half as long because he loves to “go” and he is a relentless kisser.

Can’t say enough about your wonderful staff -great from intake to outtake! Thanks again, Curt

That is what it’s all about

Alfie needed the right person to find him at the right time. First, it was Dr. Moews who saved his life. Now, it’s Curt giving Alfie the life – and love and kisses – he deserves.
