National Foster Care Month

At Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS), we don’t think it’s a coincidence that foster care, pets and mothers are all honored during the month of May.

May is National Foster Care Month. More specifically, May 4th is Foster Care Day. Saturday, May 7th is National Dog Moms Day.

Then, Sunday, May 8th is Mother ‘s Day. If you’re a dog mom, we hope you celebrated both days!

Whether you’re fostering children, a litter of kittens, puppies, or bunnies, or an adult pet, we recognize you!

Providing foster care for an adoptable pet might be one of the most noble and rewarding things you’ll ever do. It takes dedication to invite a mamma dog or cat with her new litter into your home.

In some cases, you might have puppies or kittens, but not the mommy. This usually involves round-the-clock bottle feeding. While we appreciate your work, there’s nobody there at 4 AM to give you the pat on the back you deserve. Thank you!

Thank you on behalf of Ziggy. The 9-year-old Hound mix spent 13 months in foster care before he was adopted.  In many places, this story would not have a happy ending. Today, Ziggy is beyond happy, thanks to his foster family.

We thank you on behalf of SquareBob and SpongePants, two kittens who were transferred from a rescue partner in Riverside County through our FOCAS program. How is it that we can visit our rescue friends and accept the pets they can’t care for?

It’s because of our fosters. Our foster volunteers and their families give so much of themselves to make life better…to save a life.

There’s always a need for dedicated, temporary foster care providers at RCHS, particularly during the spring and summer when there are lots of kittens and puppies. The average length of stay in foster care is 4 to 6 weeks. We train you. You’re never on your own. We’re in this together because Together We Save Lives!

Our Teen Foster Program also gives teenagers 15 and older an opportunity to work hands-on with homeless animals while they earn service hours. This team includes the teens, their parents, and our shelter staff.

If fostering isn’t right for you, please consider a donation to support this program because Every Animal Deserves a Tomorrow®. Right now, thanks to one of our generous donors, all donations are being matched $1 for $1 up to $100,000, so it’s a great time to make twice the impact with your donation.
