A Dog Named Bunnie

A Dog named Bunnie needs Your Help NOW and a New Home SOON

When Bunnie was transferred to your Rancho Coastal Humane Society through our FOCAS (Friends of County Animal Shelters) program she was pretty and bouncy. One of the care providers in the kennels chuckled when she called her an “energetic, wild woman.” That’s pretty much what you might expect of a 2 year old, 38 pound, female, Boxer mix. This dog nearly wags herself in half when she meets you. We thought Bunnie would be in her new home in a day or two.

Just like every other dog, cat, or bunny who arrives here, Bunnie was scheduled for her medical exam. Dr. Moews confirmed that Bunnie has a “Medial Patellar Luxation” in her left, hind leg. She has a luxating patella (most of us know that as a floating knee cap) and possibly a ruptured cruciate ligament.

These things don’t fix themselves. We could manage Bunnie’s pain, but the issues would only get worse unless she had surgery.
Here’s where we are right now. Bunnie is scheduled to have surgery this Friday at Veterinary Specialty Hospital. The plan is for the doctor to go in and repair the luxating patella. At that point, the surgical team will be able to assess the damage to the cruciate ligament. If necessary, they’ll repair that, too.

This isn’t cheap, but we have no choice. If we delay, Bunnie will be living in pain and the damage will only get worse. The sooner she gets her surgery, the sooner she will start to heal and the sooner she can begin her new life with her new family in her new home. A life that she might have never had if it hadn’t been for Rancho Coastal Humane Society, FOCAS, and YOU!

For updates you can watch the RCHS website at www.sdpets.org. We’ll also be posting about Bunnie’s progress on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
