Kaze is Finally “Home”
The first step of his new life began early on the morning of October 9, 2020, when Kaze and dozens of other dogs were loaded onto a rescue plane in Louisiana.
The shelter they were in was too crowded. With more threatening weather about to blow in, they had to make space for the next wave of pets due to arrive. Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS) had room. Taking them in is just what we do.
When the plane landed in El Cajon, these adoptable pets stepped onto California soil for the very first time. After a quick break, they were loaded into the RCHS vans for the 30-mile drive to the shelter.
Kaze was a one-year-old, 62-pound, male, Hound mix puppy. He was tired and confused. His file said he was “friendly and playful.” It also said he jumped at the kennel front, chewed up his bed and pulled hard on his leash.
We knew Kaze was a good dog. We knew there was a good reason why he had traveled from Baton Rouge to San Diego.
Unfortunately, his arrival took place as the COVID-19 pandemic was raging. Dogs, cats, and rabbits, who would have normally been adopted right away, instead settled into shelter life. They were safe, warm and dry. They got their meals, playtime and socialization, but they didn’t have the luxury of would-be adopters walking by.
On April 16, 2022, his 1,700-mile, year-and-a-half journey came to an end when his new family met Kaze and KNEW he needed to be “their dog.”
His new family tells us Kaze settled in overnight. He was beyond ready. Kaze realized his wait was over. He was home. Today, he really is living happily ever after. It just took time. Time that RCHS can give. Not long after his adoption, a video arrived and staff and volunteers cheered!
