President’s Letter – August 2019

Dear RCHS Friends and Family,

“Love is All You Need” – The Beatles

Well, love, and some money. Rancho Coastal Humane Society is a non-profit; none of us work here for the money. In order to achieve our perfect 100 out of 100 point rating on Charity Navigator, our non-program expenses are cut to the bone. We do what we do, staff and volunteers alike, for the love of animals.

The power of love is obvious in the sheer number of volunteers that assist at the shelter and at our Thrift Shop, many of whom devote substantial time and amazing skills. The power of love is reflected in our staff, working long hours to keep our animals happy, healthy and ready for their forever homes. The power of love is felt every time we offer a “helping paw” to someone in crisis who needs us to feed their pets or keep them safe.

Coupled with funding, the power of love accomplishes nothing short of miracles. Consider Herald and Gerald – a bonded pair of blind senior Chihuahua mixes, discovered languishing in another shelter and transferred to us through our FOCAS Program. With care and a unique environment, they were adopted by an amazing couple and are enjoying their remaining time in a way we could only hope for.

Consider Big Tex, a staff and volunteer favorite, who needed extensive orthopedic surgery. We found some funding to get it started and another amazing adopter came along and made sure to continue with all the surgeries he needed. Big Tex is now happy as can be, bounding along with new best “furfriend” in his new home.

Consider Denali, a victim of an accident causing her to lose part of one leg and leaving another mangled. A mom with beautiful pups, dumped in a box at the side of the road. Thanks to great care and funding, Denali has had her mangled leg repaired and is awaiting a prosthetic for her other leg. Her puppies all have been adopted. Denali will go home as soon as she is ready – and there won’t be a dry eye in the shelter, of that we are certain!

All you need is love, and some money, and miracles happen. Every day.

I would LOVE to see you all at Celebration of Second Chances on September 28th.

Sincerely,
