Expanding our reach to save more lives

RCHS starts with “Rescue,” and Rancho Coastal Humane Society has been rescuing abandoned companion animals for more than 61 years. When I-5 was still a sleepy country road, animal lover and founder Maria K. Lloyd, together with a handful of dedicated volunteers, worked tirelessly to save the lives of lost or abandoned animals and advocate for their second chance in a forever home. It’s a legacy kept alive by you, our loyal RCHS donors and supporters.

At RCHS, every adoptable pet has a comfortable, spacious, temperature-controlled kennel or enclosure in which to rest their weary paws. Staff members clean, feed, train and oversee their every need. Every day, an army of volunteers walk, play, socialize and interact with the dogs, cats and rabbits to keep them happy and engaged until they’re adopted.

When we merged with the La Jolla-based Friends of County Animal Shelters (FOCAS) nonprofit organization in 2012, RCHS was able to expand our reach to transport animals from other shelters where they may not get a second chance. Today, FOCAS brings nearly 90% of RCHS adoptable pets to our shelter and serves as the foundation of our Adoption Program.  FOCAS continues to grow and help partner shelters – near and far – that are overcrowded or facing natural disasters, like fires and hurricanes.  

We often say, “Together We Save Lives.” It takes a village, a community, to make a difference. Donations to RCHS help us meet the day-to-day needs of the animals waiting for a forever home, and at the same time, helps us keep the lights on. Donations support the many programs developed to meet the needs of pet owners in crisis, who need a helping paw to keep their pets healthy, safe and by their sides.
