We Were So Busy We Almost Needed a Doggone Revolving Door!

We Were So Busy We Almost Needed a Doggone Revolving Door!

When NBC 7 and Telemundo 20 introduced “Clear the Shelters” (CTS) day in San Diego, your Rancho Coastal Humane Society joined paws with our rescue partners to find homes for the pets in our kennels, cattery and rabbitat. In its fifth year nationally, potential adopters were waiting at the gate when we opened early at 8:00 AM on August 17th.

Thanks to our FOCAS (Friends of County Animal Shelters) Program, we were able to fill our kennels and cattery for the special adoption event. We began with 66 adoptable cats, dogs and rabbits. By noon, 22 of our pets (33%) had been adopted! When we closed at 3:00 PM, there had been 34 adoptions. More than 51% of the pets available for adoption found their forever families!

Fees were waived for all CTS day adoptions, but RCHS adoption counselors did what they always do – we matched the needs of the pet with the desires of the adopters.  There were so many dog interactions – where an owner’s dog meets a shelter dog – the parking lot was full of dogs, coming and going!  We even tested how an owner’s dog would react to a cat!

While we’re proud of our results, now is no time to rest on our laurels. The old saying goes, “A rolling stone gathers no moss.” At RCHS, we say, “An empty kennel gathers no adopters.”

We spent Sunday the 18th cleaning up and preparing for new arrivals, then headed out to our FOCAS rescue partners on Monday and Tuesday. By Tuesday evening we welcomed 49 new cats and dogs.

Once again, the cattery and kennels are full. Our medical team went to work examining the new arrivals, updating vaccinations, implanting microchips and scheduling spay and neuter surgeries.

The big corner kennel generated lots of “Oooohs” and “Aaaaws” as volunteers and staff members met 11 of these new arrivals, a mommy dog and her 10 puppies!

One of the adopters asked if we’re sad when the pets go home with their new adopters. While we often miss them, we’re never sad to see them begin their new lives.

That’s why we’re here. That’s why you donate your money, time, talents and sponsorships. With every adoption, the RCHS family grows – as it has been doing for nearly 60 years.

Thank you for supporting your Rancho Coastal Humane Society where Every Animal Deserves a Tomorrow®.
